Better Bicycle Commuting, an informal citizens group that sprang out of ReThink Red Deer, is generating new awareness (and plenty of discussion) about bike commuting in our community. The group held a hugely successful "Lanes for Life" ride, complete with RCMP bike escort, on September 12. They are now in touch with the Mayor and City Council to discuss initiatives that would improve our roadways for cycling.
A look at cycling routes, signage, and dedicated cycle lanes in cities from Boulder CO to Victoria BC to our southern neighbour Calgary show that creativity and commitment can create safer sharing of streets.

More and more "sustainability" is a word we're hearing from the mouths and keyboards of citizens of Red Deer. What does this word really mean and how does "being sustainable" affect your day to day life?
On Tuesday, September 22nd at the Red Deer College, organizers of ReThink Red Deer welcomed sustainability experts Lisa Fox of Sustainability Resources Inc. and the Pathways 2 Sustainability (P2S) Conference (www.pathways2sustainability.ca) to talk about how citizens can influence the Provincial Land Use Framework to plan for sustainable communities and cities in addition to the opportunity for citizens of Red Deer to host the P2S Conference in late 2010.
Also presenting was Nina Gales, Manager of Corporate Affairs from the Town of Olds, talking about their Municipal Sustainability Planning (MSP) successes and how citizens become engaged and influential in the process. With the municipal elections coming up in October 2010, sustainability will certainly be a hot debate topic so stay tuned for more info!
