ReThink Red Deer
Welcome to 2010 everyone!
ReThink Red Deer is excited to be kicking off its 2010 season of presentations and discussions with one that is close to home - and important to our future.
On Thursday, January 21, City Manager Craig Curtis presents "Building a Sustainable Community - piece by piece." Craig Curtis will report on The City's progress in applying the five "pillars of sustainability" that it follows: economic, environmental, social, cultural and governance.
As you know, 2010 is a municipal election year and it's never too early to start providing citizen input on what you think are the key election issues. in 2007, the new ReThink Red Deer organization was successful in shifting the municipal election debate towards urban planning issues.
Looking beyond the short-term hot button issues, what do you think our City needs to be doing to contribute to a sustainable, healthy future for our community and our planet?
We invite you to attend on January 21 so you can hear City administration's perspective, share your views, ask questions, and discuss options with fellow citizens. The session is 6:30-8:30, January 21, at the newly renovated RDC Margaret Parsons Theatre (courtesy of the RDC Green Campus group). Bring your friends!
Here is the calendar link.
Also in January: Learn about the Aster family (RDRN) January 20; two day Introduction to Permaculture course January 30 and 31.

Looking Ahead
The Copenhagen conference has come and gone with no dramatic change in the world's situation regarding sustainability and environmental issues. Yet our initiative in Red Deer is based on the belief that true change starts at home - with individuals, families, community groups and municipalities.
That is why we are delighted to announce that the first ReThink Red Deer session of 2010 will feature an update on The City of Red Deer's sustainability initiatives, by Mayor Morris Flewwelling and City Manager Craig Curtis. 2010 is a municipal election year and it's never too early to come out and help "set the agenda" by discussing what you think are the important issues in our community. Watch for details on our event Calendar very shortly.
Also in January is an incredible opportunity to participate in a two day Introduction to Permaculture workshop. Permaculture shows how observation of natural systems can teach us to work with our environment, rather than against it. Permaculture is about home gardening, urban agriculture, home construction, community building and much more.
A limited number of seats are still available for this January 30 / 31 learning opportunity. For workshop information, visit the event description here.
All the best to you
In the meantime, we wish you, your family and friends, all the best for a wonderful holiday season. May you enter 2010 with renewed energy and enthusiasm for a sustainable future here on planet earth.
