ReThink Red Deer
Events for everyone
Whether your interests are in Urban Gardens, Eco Tourism or gardening topics like pruning and composting, you will want to check on the newly posted events on our events Calendar. Included in the listings are a series of noon hour lunch-bag seminars at Red Deer Public Library.
Coming up on Monday, March 15 is ReThinking Urban Gardens. A new breed of gardener is sprouting up in Red Deer, turning this once quaint hobby into a dynamic, local economy-building activity. "Community gardens", "local food", "100-mile diets"... it seems like overnight that urban gardening has become more than just "the thing your grandparents used to do". And for good reason. In the face of issues like food sovereignty and food security, organic food production is finding its way back into the hands and homes of concerned citizens in Red Deer. If you're wondering what the heck food sovereignty and food security are, don't worry - you're not alone. Join ReThink Red Deer on March 15. Check the calendar for details.
Do you have a community sustainability event to promote? To have it posted on Sustainable Red Deer, simply email the event details to info@sustainablereddeer.com . We hope, before too long, to have an online form so you can post events directly.
This is a volunteer project of ReThink Red Deer, with financial sponsorship from Red Deer River Naturalists, Grandview Consulting and Focus Design Group.

At its recent planning meetings, ReThink Red Deer has identified key priorities for the coming year. Two of these are to launch a “Pathways 2 Sustainability” conference for this time next year and to seek Society status in order to be able to coordinate funds for sustainability projects in the community. Are you interested in helping out?
We are now forming a planning committee for the Pathways 2 Sustainability Conference. The Conference was first held in Cochrane in 2009 (www.pathways2sustainability.ca) and is supported by the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association. The City of Red Deer is a partner in developing the conference and other partners will be announced soon. Rene Michalak will be coordinating the conference planning. If you are interested in being on the planning team, we welcome your involvement. Contact Rene at info@rethinkreddeer.ca or 403-505-4550.
On the organizational front, we have decided to incorporate under the name Sustainable Red Deer Society, so that the organization has a legal and financial structure from which it can support sustainability and urban planning initiatives in Red Deer. We are looking for a (pro-bono) legal advisor who can assist with developing the SRDS legal structure – if you or anyone you know is interested, please contact Rene. We welcome someone with financial / bookkeeping experience to act as Treasurer, and welcome volunteers for Board positions.
Under the new structure, Sustainable Red Deer Society and ReThink Red Deer will operate collaboratively; SRDS will be the legal and formal entity, while ReThink will remain active as an informal citizens’ action group.
Thanks everyone for your ongoing support – traffic on our web sites continues to grow and we have an ambitious program of events planned for the remainder of 2010, leading up to the Pathways 2 Sustainability Conference in early 2011.
