Tips from Monday's session
Your January resolution might have been waist reduction but now it's "Garbage Free February" and time for waste reduction! Thanks for everyone who participated in Monday night's discussion on ways to reduce our individual, family and community production of waste materials.
Presenter Rene Michalak noted that our focus on Recycling often overlooks two more important elements of waste reduction: Reduce and Reuse. We can reduce the amount of garbage we produce by thinking twice about purchases, avoiding excessive packaging when we do, and repairing rather than replacing items.
A great community resource that was mentioned at Monday's session is Freecycle. Do you have unwanted items in your household or business that are still usable? If so, instead of sending them to the landfill or going through the hassle of trying to sell them for pocket change, your alternative is to post the items on Freecycle. Your listing will generate emails from people who can use your item(s) and you choose who to give it to.
Red Deer Freecycle is a simple resource that works very well.
Post your ideas on Sustainable Red Deer
We also want to remind everyone to check the Discussions and Resources section of Sustainable Red Deer for ideas and information - and to add Comments with new information that your fellow citizens may find useful. For example, we have posted information on how to recycle old electronics and a reader has posted additional information on school programs that will reuse old computers.
There is a wealth of information in our community regarding Reducing, Reusing, Recycling - and ReThinking! Share your information on Sustainable Red Deer.
