Goals
The Centre for Urban Agriculture aims to share the principles and techniques of permaculture, regenerative design, and urban homesteading while providing Central Albertans with the means to grow and access fresh, chemical-free fruits and vegetables.
We teach people how to grow healthy and delicious food in their own yards and demonstrate that high yields and low maintenance can go hand in hand towards building local food security and food sovereignty.
We research and share the connections between food, land, and community well-being and nurture the human spirit through educational programs and public outreach in both urban and rural areas.
Projects
On our two-acre food forest, dubbed "The Garden of Weedin'", we produce a vast variety of native fruits, vegetables, gourmet mushrooms, and culinary & medicinal herbs that are grown and tended to by CSA volunteers from all walks of life. Our organic growing practices allow us to feed approximately one hundred families through donations to local food banks.
In the near future, we will host a certified farmers market every Wednesday evening from June through October and operate a general (eco)store called "The Root Cellar" that sells organic and eco-friendly products while serving as a small-scale seed exchange and apothecary for the community. We are also a research and development site for alcohol fuel production which we plan to use in powering our generators and machinery - a process that creates organic fertilizer and pesticide/herbicide as a by-product!
We nourish central Alberta communities by supporting farm-to-school programs, community kitchens, preserving and gardening classes, special events, lectures, and permaculture and regenerative design apprenticeships. We also provide outreach and consultation services to churches, schools and Community Associations throughout Central Alberta interested in urban agriculture.
We welcome you to help support a network of local food enthusiasts as we journey together to connect the many urban homestead projects, community gardens, markets and local economies in central Alberta.
